COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog I want to provide a quick update on a few things based on my work in the office the past few days.   I have been doing a bit of everything related to processing applications.   Here are a few personal notes on some of the tasks, under the theme, “I am always amazed . . . “ . . . at how dry my hands get when opening mail (and we get a lot). . . . at how extremely hot printer parts get.   Note to self:   When you are printing thousands of application documents and there is a paper jam, do not just randomly grab metal parts . . . touch them first to determine if they are white hot. . . . at how quickly our email in box fills up.   We get it close to zero, step away for a few minutes, and upon returning it is once again filled with messages. . . . at how many countries and schools are represented in our applicant pool each year.   Last year we received transcripts from close to 900 different colleges and universities from over 100 countries. Now to some information that really is important to you. First, I cannot emphasize enough that it is not important for an application to be marked as complete in our system the day after the deadline.   What is extremely important is that all of the required information is received in our office or uploaded to the server by the deadline.   Thus, it is completely normal for an application record to remain incomplete for two to three weeks after the deadline.   We have several thousand printed documents and mail to get through and Admission Committee meetings do not start until late January. Please do not let the fact that it will take us time to match and track everything concern you.   The date an application is completed in our office has no bearing upon an admission decision.  When your file has been forwarded to the Committee, you will receive an email from our office. Second, please remember that when you submit Part 2, transcripts and test scores are not automatically marked as received.   The personal statement and résumés are tracked as received immediately because we rarely have problems with the submission of these documents.   But as far as the transcripts and test scores, we need to make sure that the correct information is entered and legible.    Thus we will perform a manual check and then code them into the system as appropriate. Third, as much as we would like to respond to individual requests concerning the receipt of documents, this does not allow us to work efficiently and quickly.   Each person in the office has a job and we are set up as a sort of assembly line.   If one person in the system tries to go around the process and look for a specific document, it slows the process down and complicates matters. As much as I can understand emailing or calling to ask for the status of a specific document, we would much rather you wait to hear from us. I know the stress that accompanies admission deadlines.   As someone with a graduate degree I have been through the process as an applicant, and as an administrator I have been through close to fifteen years of deadlines.   We strive to provide the best service possible and by far the best thing you can do is follow this blog for updates on the process.   Rest assured that if we encounter a situation where a document is missing, we will work with applicants if we believe a good faith effort was made to supply the necessary document by our deadline date.   There is no need to send a document a second time to us unless we reach out to you first (we will do so by email if necessary). And finally, parent may do things and make sacrifices to make sure that their children are safe and cared for. Society looks upon people who commit crimes as bad seeds in a community. But, has anyone ever really looked at the person and wondered â€Å"what could make this individual so desperate that they would risk everything to steal $50 bucks out of a cash register, or a loaf of bread from a quick stop. † Don’t get me wrong. Not everyone that steals has a good reason, nor is it right. But if you looked deep into the life of the individual, do you see them? Really see them. Most of the time these people are poor, come from broken homes and sometimes do what they have to too survive. Ask yourself â€Å"Would you steal to feed yourself or your family? † It happens every day in every city. Most of these people have low paying jobs and struggle to make ends meet. They do what they can and ask for help just to be turned away. Where is the problem? Is it the person themselves? No! It’s the society around them. People do what they must to survive no matter what. People that are for or against abortion and the laws surrounding it look to it as a moral and ethical dilemma. Let’s for a moment touch on this one; Let’s say that you are a pregnant teenager that had been brutally raped. You have a choice keep the baby, and the memory of the terrible act or abort the â€Å"fetus†. The trouble is your religion is in the way. What are you to do? Do you stick to your religion and the fear of what may happen in the next life or do you do what you feel would be a way out of a bad situation? This is where religion gets in the way of many dilemmas for people today. They have to make a choice. Keep it or don’t. For some the choice may come easy depending on how strongly you feel about your particular morality or virtue. Many people say â€Å"God never gives us more than we can handle. Is this true? Would you be able to handle this type of situation? Again that depends on the individual and their state of mind. In the end it all comes down to what they think and what the consequences of their action may be. They idea will be different for everyone, no matter what the circumstance. We cannot judge a person’s views if we do not understand them. The third and final question is How far would a parent go to keep their children safe and healthy? Many parents would say â€Å"I would give my life to keep my child safe†. This is not a fact that is being argued. What is being argued is if the parent would risk their ethical stand to protect a child. Parent’s today work so hard to make sure that their children have food and clothing and shelter. But what about the parent’s who do all of this and still are unable to provide for their families? What are the choices for them? They may steal, lie, cheat and sacrifice their own happiness to provide the same happiness to their families. Is this something that society should look upon in disgust? Or should society take a stand and help? For many years I have helped in an organization that does just this. We provide clothing food and gifts to underprivileged children every year at Christmas time to make sure that all are happy and joyous like all the other children whose parents can provide. Is this unfair to the happy child who has everything? One can argue that poor people deserve more, but in reality all parent rich or poor would do anything to ensure that their children are cared for no matter what the cost or consequence may be. â€Å"Duty may be easily performed without strain or reflection but may also prompt the well known experience of the frustration of desire together with a sense of necessity to act† (Murdoch 734) Each human has the free will and the right to choose the course of their own actions. When an individual takes responsibility for their conduct, they are ultimately acting as a rational being. Realizing that they have the ability to freely choose their actions and that no one else can force them to do something. With the freedom of choice also comes the responsibility for that decision. When an individual takes responsibility she has reached their highest state of reasoning: she has realized that not only is she free to make decisions, but also that their decisions have outcomes. By applying their free will, they are ultimately saying, â€Å"I choose to take this action, and I choose take responsibility for the consequence. † Morals depend on humans exercising their freedom of choice and acknowledging that their choices have significance. Reason allows us not to just behave instinctively or randomly, but to realize that our actions will have an outcome and to act accordingly to the end we wish to achieve. When an individual knows the result of their actions and willingly chooses to carry that behavior out, the individual freely accepts the consequences and thus takes responsibility for that end result. With all that being said, a person who is poor or pushed to a make a decision may or may not turn to religion and ethics. People are like robots and are programmed from childhood to believe or act in certain ways. They are sometimes torn by the morality of a decision and the virtues in which they believe. These choices are not easy and are not always the right ones but we are humans and we make mistakes. This is how we learn to survive and make things better for the next era. But even as an average kid, the camping, road trips and sightseeing never quite quenched my thirst for something more: culture. I can only blame my parents for my insatiable curiosity; after all, they were the ones who put me into a school that started teaching French in kindergarten. I had the American-mainland version of island fever, knowing that an entire world was just around the corner. The only way to cure my craving was to actually do something about it, so when my Youth Pastor handed me a packet with the information for a mission trip to Sydney, Australia, I mentally packed my bags. But it was the differences that I was most fascinated with as I was completely immersing myself in all things â€Å"Aussie.† It was exciting to actually take advantage of the public transportation, and excitingly awkward when we learned the hard way that asking for something â€Å"to go† and then sitting down to eat it was a major offense. Simply speaking, I got the culture shock of my life.I imagined a map of the world while I was there- the U.S. on one side and Australia on another, then I placed my house and myself at the opposite ends, and allowed that image to linger for a while. The petty problems I place so much importance on were the same problems the people I was talking to at the hostel had, and whether the outcomes of those problems were good or bad, their lives would continue and the world would go on. As it turns out, this world is pretty small once it is put into perspective, yet big enough that not one person can claim to be the center of it.I believe a well traveled person is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world, and one who can understand and appreciate many cultures has the most to offer a society that often struggles to be cohesive. As an average kid that has gotten a mere taste of my dream, I refuse to accept my surroundings as â€Å"enough.† I find myself seeking the environments in which I can most grow as a world thinker and where I can contribute my thoughts as someone looking to impact and explore this world for I know that it is there that I will thrive.
