Computer Engineering A Computer - 1340 Words
Josh Piersma Mrs. Linn Advanced Writing November 18, 2014 Computer Engineering INTRODUCTION Looking through the various topics of which to write a paper on, I came across computer engineering. For as long as I can remember I have had a fascination with computers. When I was seven years old, I came across a cube shaped object at my grandparentââ¬â¢s house. The object was called a computer, specifically an Apple Emac. My grandpa told me about all the interesting things this computer could preform. From then on, I was fixated on using the computer. Every time I went to my grandparentââ¬â¢s house, I asked if I could play on the computer. From then on, my fascination for computers only grew exponentially. Beginning my research, I already knew theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦They used a variety of people to try to create the first known digital computer. The computer was calle ABC, which stands for Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ââ¬Å"History of Computingâ⬠). John Vincent Atanasoff was a former professor around the time he created his this computer, but he was physics a nd mathematics professor. He needed to find someone that could connect all the wires and to make sure he did not electrocute himself while building the computer (ââ¬Å"History of Computingâ⬠). He then met a professor while walking along campus one day. This professor was a electrical engineering professor named Harold W. Anderson. Talking with him Atanasoff told Anderson about this computer the wanted to build, and what type of student he would need and Anderson replied, ââ¬Å" I have your man: Cliff Berry â⬠( ââ¬Å"History of Computingâ⬠). This then began the process of making the worlds first digital computer. The machine they built would not be recognizable compared to todays computers. The ABC looked nothing like todayââ¬â¢s computers: It was the size of a big desk, weighed 750 pounds, and featured rotating drums for memory, glowing vacuum tubes, and a read/write system that recorded numbers by scorching marks on cards (ââ¬Å"History of Computingâ⬠). The term computer soon took off, and engineers all over the world took to designing their own digital computer. The next big step that engineers had to figure out how to make computers talk. To get a computer to communicate with another

The Choices We Make Free Essays
Poverty in the United States today has many faces. Thereââ¬â¢s the pleading face of a middle-aged man on a city street holding up a sign that says ââ¬Å"Hungry, Need Help. â⬠Thereââ¬â¢s the anxious face of a young child in a schoolroom somewhere, whose only real meal today will be a free school lunch. We will write a custom essay sample on The Choices We Make or any similar topic only for you Order Now Thereââ¬â¢s the sad face of a single mother who doesnââ¬â¢t have enough money to buy clothes for her children. And thereââ¬â¢s the frustrated face of a young man working at a minimum-wage job who canââ¬â¢t afford to pay his rent. The sad thing is everyone knows someone like this. What are these people to do? What lengths should they go to be happy? Many times a personââ¬â¢s virtue is challenged. Especially when they are forced to choose between a basic human need or a particular ethical indiscretion. So the question is ââ¬Å"What effects do poverty and the absence of opportunity have on individualsââ¬â¢ senses of virtue? â⬠For one, a person who is poor may choose to steal to obtain a basic need such as food, shelter, or safety. Second, a person religion may be challenged when poor or in an extreme circumstance that may require a choice between following their way of believing or living. And finally, parent may do things and make sacrifices to make sure that their children are safe and cared for. Society looks upon people who commit crimes as bad seeds in a community. But, has anyone ever really looked at the person and wondered ââ¬Å"what could make this individual so desperate that they would risk everything to steal $50 bucks out of a cash register, or a loaf of bread from a quick stop. â⬠Donââ¬â¢t get me wrong. Not everyone that steals has a good reason, nor is it right. But if you looked deep into the life of the individual, do you see them? Really see them. Most of the time these people are poor, come from broken homes and sometimes do what they have to too survive. They live in poverty stricken ââ¬Å"ghettosâ⬠or in poor communities that have no resources to help them. What are they to do? Ask yourself ââ¬Å"Would you steal to feed yourself or your family? â⬠It happens every day in every city. Most of these people have low paying jobs and struggle to make ends meet. They do what they can and ask for help just to be turned away. Where is the problem? Is it the person themselves? No! Itââ¬â¢s the society around them. People do what they must to survive no matter what. Itââ¬â¢s a basic instinct that kicks in and takes over. ââ¬Å"Religion (even if ââ¬Å"primitive) is generally assumed to be in some sense moral. â⬠(Murdoch 740) People often take religion out of context and use it for their own good or the good of a specific cause. Some examples are Hitler and the Holocaust, or abortion. Hitler used god as a weapon wipe out the Jews. People that are for or against abortion and the laws surrounding it look to it as a moral and ethical dilemma. Letââ¬â¢s for a moment touch on this one; Letââ¬â¢s say that you are a pregnant teenager that had been brutally raped. You have a choice keep the baby, and the memory of the terrible act or abort the ââ¬Å"fetusâ⬠. The trouble is your religion is in the way. What are you to do? Do you stick to your religion and the fear of what may happen in the next life or do you do what you feel would be a way out of a bad situation? This is where religion gets in the way of many dilemmas for people today. They have to make a choice. Keep it or donââ¬â¢t. For some the choice may come easy depending on how strongly you feel about your particular morality or virtue. Many people say ââ¬Å"God never gives us more than we can handle. Is this true? Would you be able to handle this type of situation? Again that depends on the individual and their state of mind. In the end it all comes down to what they think and what the consequences of their action may be. They idea will be different for everyone, no matter what the circumstance. We cannot judge a personââ¬â¢s views if we do not understand them. The third and final question is How far would a parent go to keep their children safe and healthy? Many parents would say ââ¬Å"I would give my life to keep my child safeâ⬠. This is not a fact that is being argued. What is being argued is if the parent would risk their ethical stand to protect a child. Parentââ¬â¢s today work so hard to make sure that their children have food and clothing and shelter. But what about the parentââ¬â¢s who do all of this and still are unable to provide for their families? What are the choices for them? They may steal, lie, cheat and sacrifice their own happiness to provide the same happiness to their families. Is this something that society should look upon in disgust? Or should society take a stand and help? For many years I have helped in an organization that does just this. We provide clothing food and gifts to underprivileged children every year at Christmas time to make sure that all are happy and joyous like all the other children whose parents can provide. Is this unfair to the happy child who has everything? One can argue that poor people deserve more, but in reality all parent rich or poor would do anything to ensure that their children are cared for no matter what the cost or consequence may be. ââ¬Å"Duty may be easily performed without strain or reflection but may also prompt the well known experience of the frustration of desire together with a sense of necessity to actâ⬠(Murdoch 734) Each human has the free will and the right to choose the course of their own actions. When an individual takes responsibility for their conduct, they are ultimately acting as a rational being. Realizing that they have the ability to freely choose their actions and that no one else can force them to do something. With the freedom of choice also comes the responsibility for that decision. When an individual takes responsibility she has reached their highest state of reasoning: she has realized that not only is she free to make decisions, but also that their decisions have outcomes. By applying their free will, they are ultimately saying, ââ¬Å"I choose to take this action, and I choose take responsibility for the consequence. â⬠Morals depend on humans exercising their freedom of choice and acknowledging that their choices have significance. Reason allows us not to just behave instinctively or randomly, but to realize that our actions will have an outcome and to act accordingly to the end we wish to achieve. When an individual knows the result of their actions and willingly chooses to carry that behavior out, the individual freely accepts the consequences and thus takes responsibility for that end result. With all that being said, a person who is poor or pushed to a make a decision may or may not turn to religion and ethics. People are like robots and are programmed from childhood to believe or act in certain ways. They are sometimes torn by the morality of a decision and the virtues in which they believe. These choices are not easy and are not always the right ones but we are humans and we make mistakes. This is how we learn to survive and make things better for the next era. We can only take it one step at a time. How to cite The Choices We Make, Essay examples

Its Not a Small World After All free essay sample
Growing up, I did not do anything really out of the ordinary; the only safari I had been on was the one in San Diego and aside from reading and implementing my Dadââ¬â¢s copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People I was fairly average. But even as an average kid, the camping, road trips and sightseeing never quite quenched my thirst for something more: culture. I can only blame my parents for my insatiable curiosity; after all, they were the ones who put me into a school that started teaching French in kindergarten. I had the American-mainland version of island fever, knowing that an entire world was just around the corner. The only way to cure my craving was to actually do something about it, so when my Youth Pastor handed me a packet with the information for a mission trip to Sydney, Australia, I mentally packed my bags. We will write a custom essay sample on Its Not a Small World After All or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The price tag for the trip was reasonable, but still thousands more than any unemployed sixteen year old could afford. Immidiately after signing up, I talked my way into a job, sent out letters, and started begging my family and friends for empty bottles and cans to be recycled into the nickels and dimes I needed for the plane ticket.Flash forward about five months, and there I was, living my dream. I was sitting across from three people on a couch, all from different countries, in a hostel in Australia talking about politics. Who knew that four young people could have such an interesting conversation about the Liberal and Labor parties of Australia? But it was not just the conversation that surprised me it was my new friendsââ¬â¢ personal problems, ideas of what was considered ââ¬Å"funâ⬠, opinions on American TV shows, and their senses of humor that were all so similar to mine. I was experiencing so many cultures at one time just because of the location I was in, and it was a dream come true. But it was the differences that I was most fascinated with as I was completely immersing myself in all things ââ¬Å"Aussie.â⬠It was exciting to actually take advantage of the public transportation, and excitingly awkward when we learned the hard way that asking for something ââ¬Å"to goâ⬠and then sitting down to eat it was a major offense. Simply speaking, I got the culture shock of my life.I imagined a map of the world while I was there- the U.S. on one side and Australia on another, then I placed my house and myself at the opposite ends, and allowed that image to linger for a while. The petty problems I place so much importance on were the same problems the people I was talking to at the hostel had, and whether the outcomes of those problems were good or bad, their lives would continue and the world would go on. As it turns out, this world is pretty small once it is put into perspective, yet big enough that not one person can claim to be the center of it.I believe a well traveled person is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world, and one who can understand and appreciate many cultures has the most to offer a society that often struggles to be cohesive. As an average kid that has gotten a mere taste of my dream, I refuse to accept my surroundings as ââ¬Å"enough.â⬠I find myself seeking the environments in which I can most grow as a world thinker and where I can contribute my thoughts as someone looking to impact and explore this world for I know that it is there that I will thrive.

Recruitment and Staff Selection
Recruitment and Staff Selection Recruitment and Staff Selection Companies should be careful when hiring employees because the kind of employees working in an organization will determine the effectiveness of an organization. There are various methods of recruiting employees; employers can ask for records and official documents from which they can learn about the person or they can decide to do the back ground check, also known as personnel selection. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Recruitment and Staff Selection specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Health care organizations can advance the quality of their employees by implementing more effective screening procedures to avoid future problems since applicants cannot be trusted to disclose any previous cases of criminal behaviors. In many countries the employer is liable for any mistakes made by an employee especially in the medical field as the employer should have know whether the employee poses a for eseeable risk of harm or danger to others. Despite all the precautions being taken there is always a possibility of employee indiscipline that could develop later after the employee is hired. It could be deliberate, psychological or could be triggered by an event for example, death of a close person making an employee lose his or her self will. The employees should be handled with care at this stage since they could be a threat to the organization or even against themselves. There should be correction procedures for such employees, they could be; counseling sessions, warning letters, suspension, demotion, salary withdrawal or dismissal if the situation cannot be completely reversed. The following sanctions should come up progressively so as to provide time for the employee to change, while some like counseling could continue even after the employee has reformed or even after termination for rehabilitation. When terminating an employee, all details should be recorded in the personn el database including the reason for termination and any disciplinary actions that were previously administered. The termination should be properly planned and the letter should be carefully written because any ambiguities could be used against the organization in court. The employee should be informed in a private meeting and it should be as professional as possible and brief, because too much talking can lead to unpleasant arguments that the employee could use in court against the organization. All due benefits and salaries should be surrendered in time and the financial transactions should be documented for future use if needed (Lee, 1996). Designing job advertisements can be quite a challenge because the information given will determine the kind of people who will apply and hence also it will affect those that will be employed. An advertisement should be designed to capture the attention of the right people that are required not just anyone. Advertising Looking for essa y on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The title of the job should be very clear; it should be the first thing that one notices when he or she looks at the advert. The organization should also be written under its official names, location and address also should be included. The job description should be clearly stated and the entire main details clearly written hence avoiding any ambiguity. This does not mean that the advertisement should be long and prosy; it should just give the right information regarding the job. This part can comprise of the academic qualifications required, the social qualifications, duties, time; it could be full time or part time, any special requirements like female applicants or the disabled should also be included and may even include the salary but it is not necessary although it can be a good way to regulate the applicants. The grammar punctuations and language should also be accurate and precise. The most essential skills should be clearly written followed by the extras and other benefits expected. Finally instructions of how to apply for the job should be written down and the mode of application should be clear. It could be through direct mail letters or even online, however the company should ensure that the mode is reliable and easily accessible to the applicants. The deadline of application is also very important and it should be set depending on the mode of application to be used because some mediums are faster than others (Stone, 2005). There are two nursing jobs advertisements that have identified; one on the Nursing Jobsite .Com and the other on Career FAQs Medicine.com. The first is advertising for a registered general nurse to work in London south west, the job is temporary, the salary is negotiable, the job reference number is given and the address for application and that is all the information provided. That advert is very short and t oo brief, the company or hospital is not mentioned, the qualifications are not stated and neither are the duties of the nurse. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Recruitment and Staff Selection specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This advertisement leaves the applicants very confused and asking many questions and it may even discourage them because it shows lack of seriousness in the organization. The second advertisement requires a registered and experienced nurse to work in the theater suite at St Johnââ¬â¢s Royal Hospital. The details of the hospital are provided whereby, the applicants are informed that they will be trained for free for the specific job by the hospital, the qualifications are well written, other extra skills needed are also stated and also it is noted that the job is full time. The job reference number is provided and the place of sending the applications is also provided. I would apply for the s econd job because it has all the information needed about the position, the duties, and the organization is clearly provided. This shows that the hospital is well organized and it is also serious with meeting its objectives hence providing a good place to work for a personââ¬â¢s career development. Reference List Lee, E. The Analysis of a Joke Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Analysis of a Joke - Essay Example Although we think of the joke as a cultural constant, it is a form of humor that comes and goes with the rise and fall of civilizations.â⬠1 The joke that was chosen was the following: A doctor walked into a bank. Preparing to endorse a check, he pulled a rectal thermometer out of his shirt pocket and tried to write with it. Realizing his mistake, he looked at the thermometer with annoyance and said, ââ¬ËWell thats great, just great... some assholeââ¬â¢s got my pen.ââ¬â¢2 The category that this particular joke probably belongs in is the scatological category, because it deals with a reference to the rectum. Itââ¬â¢s unsure why, but these types of jokes can be particularly compellingââ¬âbecause excrement seems to be something that humans find very funny. Of course, a simpler way to say that is to just say, ââ¬Å"Poo is funny.â⬠But why? What is so funny about our own feces? Fundamentally, excrement is elemental. If we didnââ¬â¢t have it, there would be no jokes. But why is humor about feces, farts, and, in factââ¬âthe entire range of human bodily functions, fodder for jokes? One must wonder. What makes this particular joke funny is that, through a play on words, we imagine the pen being stuck in some patientââ¬â¢s behind. That seems pretty funny that there would be a mix-up like that. Thus, there is a play on words and we find this joke, for the most part, funnyââ¬âif not at least a bit crude. ... Now, itââ¬â¢s not using very polite language either. This is where the aggressive element demonstrates itself. Itââ¬â¢s not a polite joke, and it probably wouldnââ¬â¢t be polite to share in mixed company, unless the mixed company were to be as foul-mouthed as the language used in the joke. Although the jokeââ¬â¢s language is not overly offensive, it does say something about the medical profession as well. Doctors are sometimes inept, and itââ¬â¢s easy to make jokes about doctors and lawyers because they both have high-stress professions. Humor can be a wonderful way to deflect problems, as well as provide a platform for expressing oneââ¬â¢s personality. This is why comedians like Jerry Seinfeld did especially well with his show Seinfeld, and why, subsequently, comedians like Larry David did so well with his show Curb Your Enthusiasm. Many times, these humorous shows have something in commonââ¬âthey use real-life situations as fodder for something called situatio nal comedy (or a sitcom). Situational comedies bring real-life problems to light. Who could ever forget the following bits: ââ¬Å"Are you sponge-worthy?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s got man hands!â⬠Pig Man. The Soup Nazi. ââ¬Å"You double-dipped the chip.â⬠ââ¬Å"Serenity now!â⬠ââ¬Å"Give me that, you old bag!â⬠Who will ever forget these classic moments in Seinfeld history? These, and a series of other vignettes in his subsequent spin-off hit HBO comedy series--Curb Your Enthusiasm--were brought to you by none other than comedian, writer, actor, and executive producer Larry David. Larry David was the head writer and executive producer of Seinfeld, winning him a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Outstanding comedy series in the run of the showââ¬â¢s fourth year. Seinfeld made

Federalism and the Thirteen Independent Sovereignties Coursework
Federalism and the Thirteen Independent Sovereignties - Coursework Example blish how the documents presented in Chapter 5 support this contention as well as identify exactly what were the main issues that are deemed to have been responsible for pitting Americans against Americans as well as colony against colony. One of the key issues that is seen to have pitted Americans against each other and in the process lend credence to the postulation that was made by Knox is that there appeared to be a raging conflict between members of different classes in the early American society. Zinn (2010), notes that the military across the various American states was regarded as being a place for the poor as it afforded them the opportunity of rising in rank, acquiring some money and eventually being able to change their social status. However, this dream was not realized by most of the poor Americans that joined the army as Zinn (2010) points out that Governor Robert Morris who had been appointed as the superintendent of finance had implemented policies that largely ignored the common soldier who was not getting paid, was suffering in the cold, dying of sickness while all along watching the civilian profiteers progressively get richer. Another conflict that is noted to have pitted Americans against Americans is the conflict over land that pitted Native Americans against the colonialist Americans. Zinn (2010) points out that Native Americans had for the most part bee ignored by the fine words of the Declaration which had been drafted and designed in such a manner that it would not grant them equal rights to those that were granted to White Americans. Before the Revolution, the Indians that had been living in New England and Virginia had been subdued by force and that that had been living in other regions of the country had been forced to work out modes of coexistence with the colonies. However, despite their having worked out modes of coexistence with the colonizing Americans, by around the 1750, the fast growing colonial population served to increase
